Product configurator SaaS

The situation

A configurator sold as a subscription rather than a bespoke build, aimed at small and mid-sized merchants who cannot justify custom development but still sell configurable products.

What we built

  • A hosted configurator with per-merchant catalogues, options, rules and pricing
  • A WordPress plugin published on wordpress.org
  • A Shopify theme app extension, so merchants install it without editing theme code
  • BigCommerce and Wix integrations with their own OAuth flows and review processes
  • Stripe billing for direct customers and Shopify Billing for App Store customers, reconciled into one subscription model
  • A 60-day trial flow with plan upgrades, downgrades and proration

Engineering notes

The architectural decision that made this viable was a shared core with thin platform adapters. Each marketplace has its own authentication, billing, review requirements and embedding constraints, but the configurator itself is one codebase. Maintaining four separate products would not have been sustainable for a single team.

If your process today is an email, a sketch, and somebody rebuilding it by hand afterwards — that's the problem I work on.
